Solar and Battery: Time to Act Now, Don't Delay

If you've been thinking about adding solar panels or battery storage to your home, the clock is ticking. Not for years—for months. There are three converging reasons to act before the end of this year: VAT is reverting, prices are rising, and installation capacity is filling fast. There's also a fourth reason you may not have considered: this summer proved solar can power your air conditioning for free.

The VAT Cliff: March 2027

Since 2022, solar panels and battery storage have been zero-rated for VAT in the UK. That relief expires on 31 March 2027. After that date, VAT reverts to 5% for battery storage (still better than the 20% standard rate, which applied before 2022) and 5% for solar panels (a recent change from the proposed 20%).

On a typical 4 kW system installed today, that zero rate saves you roughly £400–£600 compared to what you'll pay after March. On a larger system with battery storage, the saving grows to £800–£1,200.

The real sting is that most installers quote the zero-rated price. Once VAT changes, those quotes will shift. If you want to lock in today's price, you need to commit—place a deposit, get on the installer's schedule—before the VAT change takes effect.

Panel Prices Are Rising, Not Falling

For two decades, solar panel costs have plummeted 97%. But the recent trend has reversed. While wholesale panel prices fell 3.6% from April to July 2026, this stalled decline masks a wider story: installation prices are climbing as demand surges.

The UK now has nearly 2 million homes with rooftop solar. Record high demand in 2026 means waiting lists are real. Installers are quoting 8–12 weeks from acceptance to scaffolding. In spring and summer, busy contractors quote into late summer. If you want installation before the March 2027 VAT deadline, you need to place an order within the next 24–26 weeks—which means now, not December.

Once that VAT cliff arrives, two things happen: the quote-to-install window becomes even tighter (everyone else will try to install in Q4 2026 and Q1 2027), and pricing pressure will spike. Installers will raise prices, not lower them.

The Grid Queue Is Long—But It's Clearing

The other urgency driver is the grid connection queue. For a time, the National Grid's queue for new connections became absurdly long: projects waited months or longer just for a connection offer, before work could even begin.

The good news: the National Energy System Operator (NESO) has overhauled the connections process, moving from first-come-first-served to a model that prioritises projects genuinely ready to build. This is rolling out through late 2026 and into 2027. If you're serious now, your project can move through the new framework faster than projects ordered in the rush next year.

The Underrated Benefit: Free Air Conditioning

Here's the angle nobody talks about. This summer—the June 2026 heatwave—made headlines for its intensity. It also exposed an elegant truth: solar panels and air conditioning demand are perfectly aligned.

During the June heatwave, a typical 4 kW rooftop solar installation generated enough power to run full-house air conditioning for approximately 5 hours each day. More precisely, on 21–22 June (summer solstice), UK rooftop solar produced 15 kWh—equivalent to running a 3 kW AC system for 5 hours with zero grid draw.

Why? Because cooling demand peaks midday on sunny days—exactly when solar generation peaks. You don't need a battery to benefit. You simply need solar and a conventional air conditioning unit. The sun powers your cooling in real time.

AC without the bill: A 4 kW solar system fully covers the running cost of a 4-zone AC system on most UK summer days. With the heatwaves we're seeing, that's a £30–50 saving per hot day, or £600–£1,000 per summer. Over 25 years, that's real money.

If you live in a south-facing home or flat roof, you're looking at even better solar yield. And if you add a battery—which storage costs are also dropping—you can shift that midday solar generation to evening cooling, extending the benefit into the early night.

Why December Is Too Late

By December, three things will have changed:
