For years the heat pump decision in the UK has been a fork in the road: air-to-water, which heats radiators and hot water but sits idle all summer, or air-to-air, which heats and cools brilliantly but can't easily do your hot water and misses out on the big grant. Two announcements in the space of a week suggest that fork is closing. Samsung's EHS Quint launched at InstallerSHOW on 23 June and is orderable now. Daikin's X Series was announced on 1 July and lands in September. Both do air-to-air, air-to-water and hot water from one outdoor unit. The question worth asking isn't "which one should I buy" — it's whether this convergence actually changes anything for a decision you might be making right now.
What actually launched
Start with what's real versus what's still a press release, because the two products are at very different stages.
Samsung EHS Quint is a genuine, orderable product. The 12.5kW outdoor unit (a 16kW version also exists) runs air-to-air and air-to-water simultaneously — cool one room while heating another on underfloor heating, while also charging the hot water tank — and Samsung has published real figures: COP 4.66 for heating, EER 4.01 for cooling, and an A+++ energy label at both 35°C and 55°C flow temperatures, which is unusually good at the higher flow temp most existing radiators need. It ships now, with three indoor configurations (ClimateHub, Hydro Unit or Control Kit) for installers to spec.
Daikin X Series is, right now, an announcement. It combines up to four air-to-air indoor units with one hydronic circuit (underfloor heating or radiators) and a hot water tank, from a single shared compressor that allocates capacity between whichever load needs it most. It's capped at 150m² and aimed at new-builds and full retrofits. It launches in September 2026, and Daikin has not published any COP, SCOP or price figures — only energy-label bands.

The genuinely clever bit — and it's not the same trick twice
It's worth being precise about what each brand is actually claiming, because they're solving different problems. Samsung's headline feature is heat recovery: cool your bedroom on a warm day, and the heat pulled out of that room doesn't get dumped outside — it goes into your hot-water tank instead. You were going to heat that water anyway; here it's a free by-product of cooling you also wanted. That's a real efficiency mechanism, not just marketing, and it's the kind of gain you genuinely can't get from two separate single-purpose machines.
Daikin's headline feature is different: a single inverter-driven compressor shared across air-to-air, hydronic heating and hot water, rather than two compressors running independently and never coordinating. The claimed benefit is fewer cycling losses and output that matches real-time load more closely. It's a plausible efficiency story, but unlike Samsung's heat recovery, there's no published number behind it yet.
So — do they change the game?
The category shift is real. When two tier-one global brands independently ship the same idea within days of each other, that's not a coincidence, it's a signal that the industry has decided the "air-to-air or air-to-water" fork was always an artificial one, driven by legacy product lines rather than what a home actually needs. We've said before that the heating-only, summer-idle outdoor unit is a dying design. This is that argument playing out in real launches rather than speculation.
Whether either specific product changes the game for you is a much narrower question, and the honest answer right now is no — not yet, and not because the idea is wrong. Samsung is real and orderable, but every performance figure is Samsung's own, nobody has metered a UK winter on one yet, and the price isn't public. Daikin isn't even orderable until September, and has published nothing beyond a press release. Neither has the one thing that actually de-risks a heat pump decision: independent, real-world data from someone else's roof.
The trend is the story, not the product. Two brands shipping the same idea in the same week tells you where heat pumps are heading. It doesn't tell you what either one will actually do in your house next winter.

If cooling, a renovation, or the air-to-air-versus-air-to-water dilemma is genuinely live for you and your timeline has some slack, it's worth watching both of these over the next six to twelve months — Samsung because it's close enough to buy that early-adopter data should start appearing this winter, Daikin because it isn't even shipping yet. Neither is a reason to freeze a decision that's otherwise ready.
If your current heating is failing, your BUS quote is solid, or your home doesn't fit the Daikin size cap anyway, get on with the system that fits your house today. A stacked air-to-air-plus-air-to-water setup — two separate systems doing the same two jobs, which is what I run myself — already delivers the same outcome, just without either brand's specific efficiency trick and without betting on unreleased firmware.
